That was my initial feeling when I heard about it late last night. And that hunch get's more confirmed and bleak the more I read... McCain. Closed doors. Specter. Likely agreement. None of this sounds good so far.

WSJ David Rogers (sub req.)—Senate and White House Close to Reaching a "DEAL"

Diamond Dog adds:

I am in favor of a tough immigration bill, too. Illegal entry to this country is a crime and should be treated as such. Should....be treated as such. But while I am no expert on immigration policies, it seems to me that some sort of compromise, though undesireable, may be necessary for the health of our nation's future.

When I'd first read the above bloggers' dark accounts of what is happening, I wondered if I ought to resign my newly acquired leadership posts in the GOP, move to International Falls and become a hermit.

When I hear gloom and doom accounts, I have to pause and wonder if there's a more balanced story to be understood. While I have no way of knowing the truth of these events, Captain Ed provides a little levity:

It's not great, and it's not even very good. It's not bad, though, and given our lack of strength in Congress and the White House on this issue, it's a good deal that will strengthen our national security now rather than wait another two years to address it. To quote the Rolling Stones, you can't always get what you want, but sometimes you get what you need. This is one of those times. (via Hot Air)
